My Art Collection It had been more than 3 years since i last drew a portrait on my old sketch book that i bought it during my JC days. This year the opportunity arises again and i took out the old book, a mechanical pencil, eraser and drew a portrait of a friend who worked in ICES with me. Since i dont have the time to sit down and sketching her life, the sketch was done from a photograph. I dont have prior training on how to draw portraits or still life drawings (last known knowledge was secondary 2 Art Class), so the sketches was self taught. Literally. When nisha's portraits turn out well, i had offers to draw others. So im sharing some of those that i drew here... and u guys decide if its okay... ![]() Siti is the 2nd picture i drew. Done all by a mechanical pencil, i use a non-lighting technique when drawing the face. This means i avoided all shades of light (dark tones or light tones of black) on her face. So i kept the facial outlook fresh from shading. As for the hair, if u have guessed, i literally shade it with a mechanical pencil because it gives a "natural hairline" look. Ade's picture is one of the difficult ones to be drawn because of her facial structures. The possibility of making her face too fat or thin is very high. U can see that i also avoided the tonation on her face. So she looks so much younger than her current state thanks to me. Anw, shading with a mechanical pencil is nearly impossible due to the thin ends. A pakistani gal who also seeks help to have her portrait drawn. As for Rubab, i only focused on drawing her facial features so the area below the neck (collar lines etc) wasnt drawn. Here, her nose and the curly hair she had, are the most difficult to draw! Keeping each facial features in proportion is also one of my challenges. She has yet to receive this so i dont know if she likes it though. LingLan gave me her passport photo which is so small, but i did managed to complete it tough. Same as Rubab, i havent give her the original copy. Not too sure if she finds this similar to her own face. With all these sketches, i actually kept none because all of the original sketches were given away for free. So i only had the photostated ones for my portfolio. Sad. Nonetheless, i hope to learn more and improve on portrait sketching and maybe move on to standard 2B to HB pencils which, to me is the proper stencils needed for drawing. Soon enough i also hope i can learn to add colour and bring lifeto these sketches. Probably i will get a bigger sketch book in case i had requests to draw a larger than life portraits. wrote on 3:51 pm. Monday, July 30, 2007
